Advocacy and Community Engagement

The Chin Community of Indiana (CCI) is a young and growing center which is continually striving to assist its community members in becoming fully adapted to American society. The two main goals of CCI are to help the Chin community fully incorporate into the local social structure and be good, productive citizens for the entire society.

CCI engages with the entire community of Central Indiana. CCI actively makes connections with government agencies, non-governmental agencies, local churches, schools, and businesses that create a sustainable network of partnerships. We regularly hold neighborhood meetings with both CCI members and neighborhood members which provide information for the betterment of the community. Our community partners help us grow and engage with local society, whether that be professionally or just as neighbors.

Neighborhood and community meetings and events are regularly held at the Chin Center. One such meeting includes a presentation with local police enforcement so the Chin community can be up to date and aware on basic topics such as one’s legal rights, what to do if the police stop you, citizenship, and more. This engagement with local police ensures that there is a solid relationship and understanding between the Chin community and law enforcement.

Due to language barriers and technical limitations, many people in the Chin community are only able to access crucial information via face to face communication or through their Churches. CCI effectively remedies this issue by handling all serious information that pertains to the community and getting the word out via social media, meetings/presentations, Church leaders, churches, and community programs. Our engagement with the community ensures all members are properly educated and updated about new changes and current events.

CCI has created programs that engage with local schools to empower immigrant students  in grades K-12. Students are paired up with mentors to assist them in adapting to American public school and speaking English. This creates connections between the youth of the Chin community and other new immigrants in local schools.

We also strive to minimize some of the local community’s misunderstandings of the Chin culture. CCI works to find the best way to solidify and celebrate Chin culture in the United States while also learning to abide by and appreciate crucial American values, standards, and traditions. This can be seen through the center’s educational programs that focus on the English language and citizenship classes. The center also continues upholding traditional Chin culture by celebrating events in the community such as annual Chin National Day.

CCI is focused on assisting all Chin individuals and its neighbors in becoming self-sufficient, productive citizens that help contribute to our society. We do this by offering many programs, resources, opportunities, and hope. By working with individuals in their daily lives and helping them adapt to American life, we are supporting the community as a whole toward building the American Dream.
